January spotlight: LADYFEST LONDON

Ladyfest London is coming 9 th-11th of May 2008 !!!

Ladyfest London will be a non-profit, volunteer-run feminist music, arts and activism festival held in North London 9th- 11th of May 2008, at The Underworld, the Resource Centre on Holloway Road and the Islington Arts Factory.

We want to celebrate the wealth and diversity of women's talents within the London independent art scenes and beyond, as well as to promote the 'do-it-yourself' ethic and participation in feminist discussion and activism. We aim to provide creative, accessible and friendly spaces where people of all ages and backgrounds feel welcome to take part. It is a predominantly woman-organised festival, but all are welcome to participate.

Since the first Ladyfest was organised in Olympia, WA in 2000, over 100 Ladyfests have taken place in urban locations worldwide, all independently organised by local teams of volunteers. The Ladyfest phenomenon has spearheaded a movement of progressive feminist and queer cultural activism, which Ladyfest London continues to build on...

Globalisation in action
Each community that organises a Ladyfest has specific aims and home-grown concerns. This year's Ladyfest London wants to place particular political focus on London as a cultural melting pot.

Most organisers of the festival have migrated in one way or another to become part of London. We would like to further engage with those migrating and seeking refuge and asylum. We are seeking groups to work in coalition with in awareness raising, campaigning and peer education during the festival and beyond.

What's On?
The festival will be hosting a creative and varied programme of music, film, workshops, comedy and spoken word as well as exhibiting art and photography.

The full line will be announced at the end of March, when advance discounted tickets will be available.

You can expect some amazing bands and artists you've heard of and some you haven't, films that question and some that affirm, workshops and discussions to debate, learn, share practical skills and loads more…

A small taster of things to come:

  • panel about women in the music business
  • workshops about feminist activism
  • talks by women campaigning for the rights of asylum seekers and all migrants
