Why Feminism?

  • Women do two thirds of the world's work, receive 10% of the world's income and own 1% of the means of production (Richard H. Robbins, Global Problems and the Culture of Capitalism (Allyn and Bacon 1999(
  • Two thirds of the world's 876 million illiterates are women (The World's Women, 2000)
  • More than 1 billion people live in abject poverty on less than $1 a day. 70% of people in abject poverty are women (www.kamilat.org)
  • At least one out of every three women has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime, according to a study based on 50 surveys from around the world (Amnesty International UK)
